DOST to send scholars to Malaysia

Rainier Allan Ronda - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will send faculty members of the Palawan State University and the Batangas State University to Malaysia’s premier private technological university, the Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) for masters and doctorate studies in petroleum and mechanical engineering.

Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato dela Pena and DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) director Josette Biyo signed a memorandum of understanding with UTP’s vice chancellor DatukIr Abdul Rahim Bin HjHashim at the UTP campus in Perak, Malaysia.

In the MOU, the DOST and UTP agreed for a collaborative partnership to build the capacity of faculty members of the PSU and BSU – the only universities in the Philippines offering BS Petroleum Engineering – under the foreign scholarship component of DOST-SEI.

De la Peña said the agreement is a response to the immediate need to build capacities of BSU and PSU faculties for them to better train future petroleum engineers who will be exploring the oil and gas deposits, and other energy resources of the country, and working in other areas of the energy sector.
