1,000 Nazarene devotees seek medical care

MANILA, Philippines (First update 12:04 p.m.) — The Philippine Red Cross has attended to more than 900 devotees on Monday at the crowded procession of the Black Nazarene image in Manila as of 1 p.m.

A total of 999 patients have been cared for due to various injuries, far from the 108 previously reported at 10 a.m.

There are 314 people who sustained minor injuries at the annual Catholic festival.

A pregnant woman, considered to be a major case, was assisted by the Red Cross, while five people needed to be transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

A total of 670 people needed their blood preassure checked, the Red Cross said in a statement.

The Red Cross said the first aid station at Liwasang Bonifacio beside the Manila City Hall attended to the most number of cases.

The local Red Cross deployed more than 400 personnel and 2,000 volunteers to respond to emergencies for the procession.
