MANILA, Philippines - The national carrier, which is on track to meet its passenger volume target of 13.5 million this year, is aiming to increase the number of passengers served to 15 million by next year.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) president and COO Jaime Bautista told reporters, the carrier is aiming to carry a total of 13.5 million passengers for this year.

“The 13.5 (million), we will achieve this year,” he said.

For next year, he said the goal is to serve more passengers or a total of 15 million.

He said the higher passenger volume for next year would be driven by “new routes, more destinations, more frequency (and) China charters.”

PAL recently expanded its operations through the launch of flights from the Clark International Airport.

Last Dec.16, it started offering flights between Clark and Caticlan (Boracay).

Following the launch of the Clark to Caticlan service, PAL is planning to increase operations at the Clark airport through the availability of flights to Cebu, Davao, Cagayan, as well as Incheon in South Korea and Okinawa in Japan by next year.

The flag carrier plans to make Clark one of its hubs in order to cater to passengers coming from Central and Northern Luzon.

Apart from serving those coming from Central and Northern Luzon, the move to mount flights from Clark is also PAL’s way of supporting government’s efforts to ease congestion at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.
