MANILA, Philippines - The construction of a pedestrian bridge linking the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA T3) to Newport City complex is on track and due to open in the first-half of 2017, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said yesterday.

Public Works Secretary Mark Villar told reporters during the launch of the project called Runway Manila the 220-meter elevated bridge is expected to be completed by the first half of next year.

“We are targeting first quarter and the latest by second quarter,” Villar said.

The construction of the pedestrian bridge is being funded by Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. as part of its commitment to work with the government in promoting the growth of tourism.

The enclosed and air-conditioned elevated bridge has moving walkways and elevators and can accommodate up to 2,000 persons at any time or up to 216,000 daily.

“Once completed, Runway Manila will allow the average person to walk the distance between the airport and Newport City in approximately 10 minutes,” Villar said.

With the bridge in place, Villar said passengers especially overseas Filipino workers would have an alternative to riding vehicles when going to and from the airport.

“Very soon, our travelers would be able to enjoy this additional infrastructure going to our airport. This, I think, is especially for OFWs,” he said.
