Aquino pushes more employment breaks for PWDs
MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV is pushing for the opening up of more employment opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWD), who need to make a living just like anybody else.
Just recently, PWDs were granted exemption to the VAT on certain goods and services, on top of the 20 percent discount they already enjoy.
Relatives of PWDs were also granted tax breaks in recognition of the care they provide for their differently-abled loved ones.
However, in spite of the additional benefits, PWDs have complained about discrimination in employment because of their disabilities even though they could still be productive.
Aquino said that part of building a nation is to ensure that “we are building an inclusive society where no sector is left behind from the gains of development.”
Senate Bill 1249 recently filed by Aquino seeks to guarantee the inclusion of PWDs in the workforce and provide commensurate compensation, benefits and employment terms as any other qualified employee.
The bill seeks to amend Republic Act 7277 or the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, specifically to bring up from one to two percent the positions reserved for PWDs in all government offices, agencies or corporations.
