Typhoon track to shift from Luzon; Visayas getting share of storms

May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Brace yourselves.

A Mactan-based state meteorologist has projected that land-falling tropical cyclones will track across central Philippines or the Visayas region once the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as “Amihan,” sets in.

For the past few months storms have been traveling along northern Philippines or the Luzon area.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration earlier announced on October 14 that Southwest Monsoon named in the country as "Habagat" is officially over after recent climate analyses showed that it has weakened.

Engineer Alfredo Quiblat Jr., officer-in-charge of PAGASA-Cebu,  told The FREEMAN yesterday that the climate over the country is in transition as of now, and the direction of the winds shifts gradually from southwest to northeast.

"Habagat is already gone. We are still on a transition period right now wherein the (direction of the) wind slowly changes to the northeast that originates from mainland China," he said in an interview yesterday over the phone. (FREEMAN)
