MANILA, Philippines - PLDT Inc. opened yesterday its P4-billion VITRO data center in Makati City, the biggest data facility in the country, which seeks to cater to the requirements of banks, business process outsourcing firms, information technology and content providers, government institutions and other organizations handling vital data.

Speaking at the opening of the data center, Eric Alberto, PLDT executive vice president and ePLDT president and CEO said the facility which occupies a nearly two-hectare property and has a capacity of 3,600 racks, is currently the largest in the country.

With the opening of the new facility, PLDT now has a total of seven data centers with a capacity of nearly 7,000 racks to serve the needs of small, medium, and large enterprises across various industries.

“PLDT is investing heavily in our VITRO data centers as we believe that these facilities are one of the basic building blocks of the country’s digital economy. This data center will be a vital resource for companies as they ramp up their own digital services,” PLDT chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said in a statement.

Alberto said the firm decided to open the new data center to serve the firms which need a secure place to house their data.

“PLDT recognizes how vital it is for enterprises to ensure stable operations despite changes in the external environment. The need for scalable and secure hosting facilities to house and manage critical platforms is also growing in importance as the enterprise becomes more data-driven as a result of continuous digital transformation initiatives,” he said.

The new facility is equipped with systems to guarantee continuous operations, ensuring that businesses can utilize robust and scalable digital infrastructure, as well as world-class 24/7 technical support capabilities.

It could withstand earthquakes up to intensity eight in the Richter scale, as it is built on solid ground without seismic faults within its proximity.

PLDT likewise used special architectural techniques and materials planning for the new data center to have fire-rated concrete walls and flood-protected design.

The facility also boasts of 11 layers of security, making it one of the most secure and impenetrable structures in the country, to address the growing concern over digital security.

After the VITRO data center in Makati, PLDT is set to open other facilities in the country to bring the total number to 10 with a capacity of over 9,000 racks and cumulative investments amounting to P10 billion by 2017.
