Globe allots $500 M for data business expansion

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Globe Telecom Inc. is spending close to $500 million over a five-year period to expand its corporate data network to address the rising requirements of enterprise clients.

“A growing number of enterprises today use software applications delivered via cloud which require significant bandwidth. Deploying fiber in key areas will enhance productivity, efficiency and competitiveness of businesses that will sustain the growth momentum of the Philippine economy,” Globe CFO Rizza Maniego-Eala said.

Through the investment, Globe wants to support the information communications technology (ICT) requirements of finance, services, retail, information technology – business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) and manufacturing enterprises as they expand their operations.

Globe caters to enterprises through its corporate ICT arm Globe Business.

At present, Globe Business has an 81 percent penetration of IT-BPO companies by providing business products and solutions.

Globe’s work on beefing up its network capacity for enterprises is in line with its goal to provide ultra fast Internet to two million homes in 20,000 baranggays by 2020. The telco has allotted $2 billion for this initiative.

The Ayala-led telco’s massive infrastructure build involves deployment of fiber optics in 20,000 baranggays.

Fiber optics offer the fastest way to access data, enabling users to have higher download and upload speeds.

Globe’s capacity expansion program covers both mobile and wireline using different technologies including 3G, LTE and Wi-Fi.

“With the deployment of fiber broadband technology, the infrastructure for data connectivity of enterprises allows for fast, critical connections involving huge amounts of data at all times. We’re hoping that with the twin projects for enterprises and individual customers, they will have access to a more reliable and resilient network that addresses their need for ultra-fast data connectivity,” Eala said.
