Emperador income flat at P1.4B in Q1

Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Andrew Tan’s Emperador Inc., now the world’s largest brandy company and the Philippines’ largest liquor conglomerate, reported a net income of P1.4 billion

in the first quarter of the year, same as a year ago.

During the period, the company reported P9 billion in consolidated revenues although no sales figures as well as updated financial statements were immediately available.

The P9 billion revenues generated during the quarter amounted to almost the same as the P8.9 billion churned in the same period last year.

Nevertheless, Winston Co, president of Emperador Inc., said the first quarter marked a significant milestone for the company with the acquisition of 286-year-old Bodegas Fundador from Spain’s Beam Suntory.

Emperador and Fundador brandy production facilities, combined, make Emperador Inc. the largest brandy entity in the world, Co said.

“We have an unprecedented and compelling ownership of vineyards, bottling facilities and distilleries. We already have 1,500 hectares of vineyard land, roughly 1,000,000 square meters of cellar and bottling facilities, and three distilleries in Spain,” Co said.

He added that in 2014, the acquisition of Scotch whisky company Whyte and Mackay jump-started Emperador Inc’s transformation into a world-class company.

Co said “the acquisition of Fundador brandy sealed the deal making our company truly global, with access to 100 countries.”

At present, the company’s brandy and whisky product portfolio he said is comprised of standard, premium, super premium, and luxury offerings.

“While maintaining our brandy dominance in local liquor brands with Emperador brandy, we have enviable presence in foreign liquor brands in the Philippines with our Fundador brandy and single malt brands The Dalmore and Jura,” Co said.

In the same period last year, Emperador also posted a net income of P1.4 billion but noted some pressure on its margin as a result of the increase in liquor tax at the beginning of 2015, Co said.

The increase in liquor tax followed the restructuring of excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco. Higher rates were introduced in order to reduce the consumption of harmful products and promote better health in the country.

Today, Emperador is a holding company which operates an integrated business of manufacturing, bottling and distributing distilled spirits and other alcoholic beverages. It is majority owned by Alliance Global Inc.

Its brands include Emperador Brandy, Emperador Light, Emperador Deluxe Spanish Edition, and The BaR.

Through the Whyte and Mackay Group, it also owns the following brands The Dalmore Single Highland Malt, Jura Premium Single Malt, Whyte & Mackay Blended Scotch Whiskey, Valdivar, Glayva, Claymore, and John Barr.
