Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is set to hold the bidding for the 120 brand new light rail vehicles (LRVs) or train cars for the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT 1) train system next week.

The DOTC said interested firms are given until Feb. 16 to submit bids for the procurement of the new train cars.

The bidding for the supply of the LRVs is open only to Japanese-led companies or consortia as the procurement is being funded via a loan extended by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said the agency is hopeful bidders will show up even as there is strong demand for rolling stock in Japan.

There is a surge in demand for rolling stock in Japan as Tokyo is hosting the Olympics in 2020.
