ICTSI completes upgrade of Poland container terminal

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A unit of listed port operator International Container Terminal Service Inc. (ICTSI) has completed the upgrade of a container terminal in Poland.

In a statement yesterday, ICTSI said its subsidiary Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) has concluded the railway terminal modernization project in Gdynia in Poland last December.

The upgrade was undertaken with the Port of Gdynia Authority and backed by the European Union Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.

The new rail facility is expected to serve up to 24 full container trains each day. It has an annual capacity of 500,000 twenty-foot equivalent units.

“This joint investment improves the competitiveness of our terminal and the port of Gdynia,” BCT chief executive officer Krzysztof Szymborski said.

He added it was important they “were able to determine the scope of responsibilities with the Port of Gdynia Authority at the early stages in order to implement the project together.”

The Port of Gdynia Authority was responsible for the development and modernization of the terminal’s rail network and other related infrastructure.

BCT meanwhile, acquired and installed two rail-mounted gantry cranes from Kocks Krane GmbH for handling of full container cranes.  Each crane is capable of more than 30 moves per hour.

Following the upgrade, BCT intends to make further improvements on the terminal’s train service.

In particular, it is looking to invest in electric traction to improve train handling at the port.
