New food security chief assumes office
MANILA, Philippines - New food security chief Edel Guiza has assumed her duties last Oct. 1, former Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agricultural Modernization (OPAFSAM) Francis Pangilinan said yesterday.
Pangilinan announced on Sept. 15 his resignation from the Cabinet effective Sept. 30 to prepare for his senatorial bid.
He was appointed food security chief in May 2014. Under his term, several attached agencies of the Department of Agriculture (DA) were placed directly under his supervision. These include the National Food Authority (NFA), National Irrigation Administration (NIA), Philippine Coconut Authority and the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA).
His appointment came on the heels of controversies hounding the Department of Agriculture on the alleged misuse of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).
With Guiza’s appointment, the four agriculture agencies placed under Pangilinan’s supervision would remain under OPAFSAM.
