Shell clinches safety industry awards

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Several worksites, businesses and staff from Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) were recently recognized by the Safety Organization of the Philippines, Inc. (SOPI) during its 47th National Industrial Safety Convention themed “Facing Challenges: Gaining from Experiences.”

The convention aimed to motivate industries to prevail over occupational safety and health challenges by building on current knowledge, sharing best practices, and strengthening the advocacy of a healthy and safe work environment.

Outstanding companies and individuals in the league of Occupational Safety and Health were recognized during the three-day convention held recently at the Crowne Legacy Hotel in Baguio City.

Among the companies that received SOPI’s highest award was Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp.’s (PSPC) Shell Pandacan Terminal, conferred with an Award of Excellence. Shell Pandacan Terminal is one of the facilities that achieved an exemplary record of 7 million safe man-hours without lost time injury.

Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX), operator of the Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant in Batangas, was one of eight companies that received an award of honor for its 3.5-million safe man-hours with no lost time accident (LTA), since the facility started operations in 2001.

The North Mindanao Import Facility (NMIF) project of PSPC in Cagayan de Oro also bagged an award of merit for achieving 1 million safe man-hours without LTA.

Other PSPC terminals—namely the Iligan Terminal, Masbate Terminal, Poro Terminal, Calapan Terminal and Puerto Princesa Terminal—along with the Shell Aviation business were cited with a perfect safety record after successfully achieving one full calendar year with no LTA.

Aside from industrial awards, notable safety practitioners were also recognized during the convention. SPEX operations engineer Archimedes O. Chua and Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) specialist Von Karlo D. Alday of Shell Business Operations (SBO)–Manila were named Outstanding Safety Practitioners for 2014.

Shell, as a global leader in power, energy, and gas technology, is working to meet increasing energy demand and supply challenges by delivering smarter products and cleaner energy, smarter infrastructure, promoting smarter use and by developing new energy sources while addressing the impact on the environment, through advanced fuels and lubricants technology and unlocking sources of cleaner burning-natural gas.

The SOPI Awards earned by the different Shell worksites, businesses and staff show the company’s strong focus in prioritizing safety across all aspects of operations, by instilling a culture of commitment to safety for its staff, contractors and for the communities where its facilities operate.
