Solar Phls to make SM North world’s largest solar-powered mall

Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The SM Group has partnered with local power firm Solar Philippines to transform SM North EDSA into the world’s largest solar-powered mall.

President Aquino is scheduled to inaugurate the solar power project at SM’s North Edsa branch on Monday, Solar Philippines yesterday said.

For the project, Solar Philippines provided 5,760 solar panels and 60 inverters at the North EDSA parking building, covering 12,000 square meters.

The 1.5-megawatt solar mall project will be able to augment SM North Edsa’s power requirements, or the equivalent of 2,000 Filipino homes.

Solar Philippines president Leandro Leviste said with big solar projects, companies can benefit from economies of scale.

“By building the country’s largest projects, we’ve become the first local company to make solar cost-competitive with fossil fuel,” he said.

He said as the company expands into more high-profile commercial projects, Solar Philippines is taking advantage of economies of scale to bring solar energy to the residential market at more affordable prices.

The SM project comes just barely two months after the company launched the country’s largest own-use solar plant at the Central Mall in Binan, Laguna.

The company also recently introduced residential packages for Metro Manila homeowners to drastically cut their electricity bills, taking the company further along its mission of bringing solar power to every home and business in the country.

Solar Philippines develops solar facilities and also provides all-in-one solar financing, design, and construction for solar projects at zero cost for commercial customers.

Composed of individuals from the solar, construction and power industries, the company is growing fast to meet the need for affordable, clean, distributed generation.
