Lawrence Agcaoili - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. has launched a pre-register portal for the much-awaited iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus that could be available in the country as early as this year.

Interested buyers could now register through Globe’s website and choose which color and capacity of the newest member of the iPhone family they wish to get.

No other details such as the timetable for the arrival of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units were provided.

On the other hand, Smart Communications Inc. of dominant carrier Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) has yet to launch the pre-order for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Launched last September, Apple’s iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch retina HD display while iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch display.

Both phones include the Apple-designed A8 chip with second generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture, advanced iSight and FaceTime HD cameras, ultrafast wireless technologies, iOS 8, and Apple Pay.

Globe’s subscriber base jumped 19 percent to a record 45 million as of the end of June this year from 37.9 million in the same period last year due to a substantial customer uptake in its mobile and broadband businesses.

Its prepaid subscriber base reached 19.3 million while that of TM hit 21.3 million.

On the other hand, Globe’s postpaid subscriber base reached 2.1 million as of end-June this year.

On the other hand, the PLDT Group’s total subscriber base stood at 74.7 million as of end-June with cellular subscriber base numbering to 68.9 million including Smart with 25.6 million, Talk ‘N Text with 28.1 million, and Sun Cellular with 15.3 million.
