The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom is celebrating its “0916” and “0917” prefixes with the Social Good Summit on September 16 and 17, to highlight the role of technology and new media in addressing the country's problems, especially in the area of disaster risk reduction and management.

The PH+SocialGood: Manila #2030NOW summit examines the role of new media and technology in dealing with climate change and its effects, how businesses can empower women, how efforts are being done to bring Internet access to everyone and how people can safeguard themselves from the effects of natural disasters.

“Telecommunications is a vital component of DRRM, thus, Globe continuously works on ways to limit the impact of any disruption in its operations especially during calamities. It has a business continuity management policy in place which prioritizes the safety of the people and ensures the delivery of products and services even during disasters," said Yoly Crisanto, senior vice president of Globe Corporate Communications.

Globe said it is committed to its customers in responding to incidents such as typhoon 'Yolanda,' when it managed to partially restore crucial communications services within two days. It added that it is also active in helping communities hit by disasters through relief operations and services such as Libreng Tawag and phone charging.

Globe is also the development sponsor of Aklan, one of the 14 provinces severely damaged by the super typhoon. Through the project “Bulig 4 Aklan,” Globe has committed to provide education, housing, health, and livelihood assistance to seven affected towns, namely: Libacao, Madalag, Banga, Batan, Altavas, Balete and New Washington.

Globe Telecom is a major sponsor of PH+SocialGood summit. The speakers include Praveen Agrawal, country director of the United Nations World Food Programme; Kelli Arena, executive director, Global Center for Journalism and Democracy; Jackie Chang, product partnerships manager, Facebook; Luli Heras-de Leon, president, Ayala Foundation, Inc.; and Lucille Sering, vice chair, Climate Change Commission.
