Poachers target Angat Dam watershed

MALOLOS CITY, Philippines — Forest guards of the National Power Corporation discovered more than one thousand board feet of illegal lumbers from Angat Dam Watershed in Norzagaray town section.

The forest guards also confiscated a chainsaw, but no one was arrested as the suspected timber poachers immediately fled.

Mendel Garcia, head of the Napocor-Angat Watershed Area Team (Awat), said they are still retrieving other lumber in the area.

“We have asked assistance from the 56th Infantry Battalion and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to ensure safe retrieval,” Garcia said.

He said that the illegally cut lumber were discovered by Napocor-AWAT forest guards after conducting patrols on the vicinity of the watershed in San Mateo village.

A protected wildlife area, the 55,000-hectare Angat Dam watershed supplies 97 percent of Metro Manila’s potable water requirement, and is listed as the most critical watershed area in the country.

Both the watershed and the Angat River HydroElectric Power Plant (Arhepp) are being managed by the Napocor.

Residents said that group known as the Aniban ng Manggagawa sa Agrikultura (AMA) are behind the timber poaching operations within the watershed.

“Armado ang mga yan, kasi mga bata ng pulis,” a resident who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal.

Earlier, Pastor Winifredo Montecillo of the Assemblies of God church was stabbed to death after conducting a Bible study in their church in the area.

Residents said that Montecillo was killed by timber poachers after he spoke against them and tipped the Napocor-AWAT of their illegal activities.
