Government recalls envoy to Libya

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The Philippine government has recalled its envoy to Libya today, who was accredited to the former government of former Libyan leader Moamar Gadhafi.

"Ambassador Alejandro Vicente is being recalled to Manila following the Philippine government's recognition of the new transitional government on Aug. 30, 2011. Ambassador Vicente was accredited to the former government," Foreign Affairs Spokesman Raul Hernandez said in a statement.

Hernandez assured that Vicente's recall will not affect the delivery of consular service and assistance to the remaining Filipinos in Libya. A skeletal force will remain in the embassy to help them.

There are about 2,000 Filipinos, mostly medical workers, who chose to stay in Libya for personal and professional reasons.
