Army to secure P2.1B road projects in Catanduanes

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – The Philippine Army will provide security on the implementation of two vital government projects worth some P2.1 billion in the rebel-infested island province of Catanduanes, a top military official in Bicol said.

The projects, whose actual civil engineering works are set to start early next year, include the P1.5 billion improvement of the Catanduanes Circumferential Road (CCR), funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC); and the P672 million upgrading of a 29.32-kilometer national and secondary roads.

Maj. General Josue Gaverza Jr., commanding officer of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division based Camarines Sur, said contractors of these projects had already received extortion demands from the New People’s Army (NPA) unit operating in the province.

Gaverza said the Army unit in the area has already been coordinating with the district engineering office of Department of Public Highways (DPWH) for security arrangements.

Meantime, DPWH regional director Danilo Dequito said engineers of the consultancy firms that are undertaking the preliminary works have already arrived in here and now conducting ocular inspections and documentations of the 64.4-kilometer project site.
