4 killed in road accident in Indian-controlled Kashmir

KASHMIR (Xinhua) – Four people were killed and four others were injured after a passenger taxi they were traveling skidded off the road and fell down in a gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Tuesday.

The accident took place Monday late afternoon near Ramsoo in Ramban district, 160 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Four people were killed and four others injured, when a taxi skidded off the road and fell into a 300 feet deep gorge Monday late afternoon near Ramsoo area,"said a police official posted in the area."The bodies were retrieved and wounded persons were removed to hospitals for treatment."

No sooner the news about accident spread, locals and policemen rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.

The health officials pressed in ambulances to carry injured and dead to the hospital, officials said.

According to officials, the ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK03C-1843 was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar.

Deadly road accidents are common in this mountainous region often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to traffic department officials 1,080 people died in more than 6,129 road accidents across Indian-controlled Kashmir last year.
