Asian stock markets mixed in early trading

TOKYO (AP) – Asian stock markets were mixed in early trading Tuesday, but sentiment remained firm following gains on Wall Street amid growing optimism over a US economic recovery.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average fell 72.58 points, or 0.6 percent, to 11,266.72. South Korea's Kospi index added 0.3 percent to 1,730.11, and Australia's benchmark rose 29 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,954.90.

In New York overnight, the Dow Jones industrials gained 46.48, or 0.4 percent, to 10,973.55, lifted by an encouraging US jobs report released Friday. The US stock market was closed for Good Friday so traders didn't have a chance to react to the job report until Monday.

The Labor Department said Friday American employers added 162,000 jobs in March, the largest job gain in three years. The US unemployment rate stayed at 9.7 percent for the third straight month.

The encouraging US job report underpinned hopes for a recovery in the world's biggest economy.

In currencies, the dollar slipped to 94.12 yen in Tokyo from 94.41 in New York. The euro stood at $1.3466 from $1.3479.
