Bicol barangays isolated by 'Dante'

MANILA, Philippines - Many villages in the Bicol region have been isolated due to flashfloods and soil erosions caused by typhoon "Dante," a Church official bared today.

Sorsogon bishop Arturo Bastes said the situation in the villages have prevented the relief goods from reaching the affected families.

He cited barangays (villages) of Kubo, Magallanes and Labao, Irosin where several bridges had collapsed due to strong current.

"The provincial and municipal governments are ready to do relief operations but the affected areas [are difficult to reach]," Bastes said in an interview with Church-run Radyo Veritas.

In Barangay Kubo in Magallanes, Sorsogon, Bastes said authorities recorded 18 people dead, with six cadavers yet to be recovered.

"We are calling for help especially from the national government... maybe if it possible they will come wih helicopters and some big boats because it is very impossible to reach them [affected families] using small boats. I'm asking the national government to come and [bring] relief goods from Manila," he said.
