Lim bans swimming in Manila Bay

MANILA, Philippines -- Manila mayor Alfredo Lim has prohibited swimming in the Manila bay, citing the potential health hazards it could cause, reports said today.

Reports said about six trucks of garbage are collected every week from the bay, a known tourist spot and one of the busiest natural harbors in the country.

The Department of Health (DOH) said hazardous chemicals can also be found in the Manila bay, prompting the government agency to convince local officials to ban swimming in the area.

For his part, Lim quickly responded to the DOH’s call, saying signs would be set up within the area to alert the public of the swimming ban. Police personnel will also be deployed to apprehend violators.

Lim said that as an alternative, the swimming facilities of the Manila Sports Complex will be immediately made available to the public, reports added.
