(The Philippine Star) - January 5, 2013 - 10:00pm

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Tropical storm Sonamu (local name "Auring") left one person dead and about a hundred families still in evacuation centers in western and southern Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said today.

The casualty was identified as Pedro Francisco, a 35-year-old man at Iraan village, Rizal town of the province of Palawan, the agency said.

Francisco died after he was hit by an uprooted coconut tree, it added.

Meanwhile, about a hundred families or some 500 people were evacuated in a basketball court in Quezon town, southern Philippine province of Bukidnon yesterday afternoon as flash floods occurred in the area due to continuous rains brought by the storm, NDRRMC said.

According to the agency, power interruptions were also being experienced in Puerto Princesa City, Aborlan, Brookes Point and Quezon, all in Palawan.

The weather forecasting agency of the Philippines said that the tropical storm had left the Philippine area of responsibility.
