MANILA, Philippines - Newly-appointed Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas II on Wednesday passed the committee level grilling of the Commission on Appointments (CA).
A radio report said Roxas withstood the grilling of the CA members and was recommended for confirmation in less than two hours.
Roxas will now be grilled in the plenary of the CA, where Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago is expected to block his appointment, the report added.
In an interview after his confirmation, Roxas said he respects the decision of Santiago to veto his appointment.
"Nagpapasalamat ako sa statement of support na nanggagaling sa mga members of the commission pati na rin kay Senadora Miriam na kung saan sinabi nya na she considers me more than qualified," Roxas said.
Santiago previously said she would veto Roxas' appointment after he snobbed the Senate's hearing on resigned DILG Undersecretary Rico Puno last Friday.
The senator had also said that she will also veto the appointment of other Cabinet members who also snubbed her committee's hearing.
Aside from Roxas, Environment Secretary Ramon Paje Jr. and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima also snubbed the hearing.
