ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - At least seven people died and eight others got injured when two vehicles collided and caught fire in Zamboanga Sibugay last night, local police said today.
The police said Saturday that a passenger van collided head on against a speeding mini-truck transporting gasoline, along the highway of the village of Poblacion in Titay, a town in Zamboanga Sibugay, last night.
Police investigator reported that the truck was trying to avoid an incoming vehicle but collided head on the succeeding van. The strong impact of the collision forced the gasoline from the truck to spill and blanketed the two ill-fated vehicles with their passengers trapped inside as it started to catch fire.
Residents nearby managed to rescue eight passengers as the fire started to engulf the vehicles. However, seven other victims, including both drivers, were trapped and torched from the blazing inferno, the police added.
According to the police, firefighters tried to extinguish the fire later, but the victims had already been charred beyond recognition. The eight survivors who got hurt in the mishap were brought to the hospital in neighbor city for treatment.
