Four dead in Zamboanga landslide

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) -- A landslide killed at least four family members on Saturday in southern Philippines, an official said on Sunday.

Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said the victims were inside their house in the township of Midsalip in Zamboanga del Sur province when the mudslide, caused by heavy rains brought about by typhoon Gener, struck.

Ramos said the victims were buried alive along with their house.

The typhoon has left 46 people dead, 35 injured and four missing in the Philippines.

Ramos said that the weather disturbance also caused an estimated damage of P289.853 million on infrastructure and agriculture sectors.

While the typhoon had already left the Philippine territory, 49, 975 families or 279,968 individuals are still being served in different evacuation centers, and the state of calamity was declared in different areas during the height of the typhoon, he said.
