Spare small fish pens, LLDA asked

Rhodina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  Small fish cages in Laguna de Bay should not be demolished, fisherfolk and militant groups have called on the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA).

In a joint statement, the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) and Save Laguna Lake Movement (SLLM) said open fishing alone would not sustain the needs of their families.

“The anti-fish pen resolution order should be revised to specify that only corporate-owned fish pens should be on the government’s watch list. We could help pinpoint these giant corporations,” Pamalakaya and SLLM said in a joint statement.

“We still need alternative modes like culturing of fish or setting up traps like baklad,” said Ronnie Molera, spokesperson for SLLM.

The DENR led the dismantling of fish pens in the lake on Jan. 27 and Feb. 24 even as the  LLDA declared a moratorium on fish pen operations for one year.
