MOPC-SMC Cup at Manila Golf

THIS WEEK ON PEOPLEASIA - The Philippine Star
MOPC-SMC Cup at Manila Golf

With tournament champion Jera Sison (sixth from left) and (from left) MOPC’s Tony Lopez and Nelia Gonzalez, second runner-up Carlo Carpio, first runner-up Charlie Carmona, Singapore Ambassador Kok Li Peng, MOPC’s Hector Villanueva and MVP Group’s Mike Toledo.

The Manila Overseas Press Club’s 2017 MOPC-SMC Golf Cup, with San Miguel Corp. as the main sponsor,  was definitely very successful.

Held at the world-class Manila Golf and Country Club — acknowledged as one of the most prestigious and exclusive golf clubs in the country today — the by-invitation-only tournament saw media personalities battling it out with executives from San Miguel and other top companies.

The event jumpstarted with the ceremonial tee-off led by Pakistani Ambassador Safdar Hayat, SMC Media Affairs Group head Mary Jane Llanes and Thai Embassy First Secretary Rathanand Vichaidit.

Friends from the diplomatic circle also showed their support, among them Indonesia Ambassador Johny Lumintang, Singapore Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Scott Loh, Swiss Embassy’s Samuel Cobbi and Belgian Embassay’s Patrick Czyzak, who all joined the competition. Also dropping by were US Ambassador Sung Kim and Singapore Ambassador Kok Li Peng.

Emerging as champion during the fun but intense tournament was Jera Sison, with Charlie Carmona and Carlo Carpio as first and second runners-up, respectively.

The Top 3 winners received good-natured ribbing from the other players during the awarding ceremonies presided over  by MVP media bureau head Mike Toledo. It was definitely an enjoyable afternoon of camaraderie, with participants also appreciative of the event tokens courtesy of San Miguel.

As the oldest and premier press club in the country — having been founded in 1945 — the MOPC undertakes events such as the MOPC-SMC Golf Cup to raise funds that would help support several projects, among them a scholarship program for poor but deserving students, as well as children of journalists who wish to take up Journalism in some of the country’s premier universities. - Photos by Ramon Joseph J.
