‘The team that works together, wins together’

Serena Ordoveza - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Learn from the best when it comes to sports team management.

Always at the forefront in providing world-class continuing education for top management through its highly popular leadership development programs, executive talks and corporate series, First Pacific Leadership Academy (FPLA) continues to expand its range of training expertise through its upcoming Sports Team Management Congress on Oct. 10 at the Rizal Hall of First Pacific Leadership Academy in Antipolo City.

Having observed the rising value and popularity of sports in the Philippines, there is, of course, an increasing demand to professionalize sports management. It’s quite common to see sports teams not able to live up to their potential due to general mismanagement — on and off the court.

To address this emerging need, FPLA has already undertaken the initiative to conceptualize sports management programs centered on leadership through the Sports Team Management Congress with the theme “The Team That Works Together, Wins Together.”

Just like any company, a sports team is also dependent on a formal organizational structure. Composed of members playing different roles that are key to the team’s success, it’s imperative that they are able to work out a system that will allow them to perform more efficiently and to the best of their abilities.

With sports commentator and former PBA cager Albert Henry “Ali” Peek hosting and moderating the event, the congress is expected to feature an interesting and highly-relevant selection of topics like defining the ideal role of a team manager (The Boss Man — a.k.a. The Team General Manager); defining the different positions as well as corresponding roles of each team member (Many Are Called, Few Are Chosen — Building the Dream Team); how to lay out the team’s objectives in line with its mission (A Champion’s Journey — Plotting a Roadmap Towards Victory); and building team brand equity through leveraging on the team’s winnings (What’s in a Name? — Building the Value of Your Team’s Brand).

Sharing their expertise, experiences and knowledge on the said topics are industry experts like sports leaders, executives and managers, who will generously share their insights and their respective framework in managing sports teams. First Pacific Leadership Academy general manager and executive director Roy Agustin Evalle will open the event.

Its prestigious lineup of speakers in the morning and afternoon plenary sessions include MVP Sports Foundation chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, CleanTech president and CEO Salvador “Aboy” Castro Jr., PBA Meralco Bolts team manager Paolo Trillo, Global Link Travel and Tours president and Batang Gilas Pilipinas team manager Andrew Teh, Philippine Taekwondo Association assistant vice president Dr. Manolo Gabriel and MediaFive Marketing Corp.’s Jane Basas.

Meanwhile, the afternoon workshop will feature senior sports marketing manager Christopher “Epok” Quimpo, Philippine Taekwondo Association Kyorugi and Poomsae head coach Igor Mella, Philippine Rugby Football Union/Philippine Volcanoes general manager Jake Robrigado Letts and Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines executive director Ed Picson as speakers and facilitators.

The congress will also feature the country’s top coaches and athletes as panelists to share their extensive experience and wisdom on the importance of fostering a collaborative work environment between them and team management.

To cap off the event is First Pacific Leadership Academy head for sports leadership programs Arturo Aro.

The event is expected to gather 200 sports managers, leaders and other participants from the academe, government and the private sector and is something that those in the industry should definitely not miss.
