Ilocos Sur wins Corn Quality Award anew

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The provincial government of Ilocos Sur bagged the Outstanding Quality Corn Achiever Award second time in a row.

Ilocos Sur produced 5.8 metric tons of corn or more than double the 2.24 MT produced in 2015.

Provincial Governor Ryan Luis Singson said this back-to-back win was realized through the strong support of the provincial government, the agriculture department and the local government units, coupled with the commendable performance of Ilocos Sur farmers.

Singson initiated several corn development programs in an effort to increase production and raise the quality of corn seeds to be planted in the farmlands of the province.

These include production support, provision of farm implements, irrigation and water system, farm machinery  extension and training support, and even marketing support that could lead to high-quality corn produce.

“This year’s success is also a challenge for us on how to sustain and even improve the corn industry,” Singson said.

Singson said the cash award they received last year aided the farmers in their post-production through the purchase of new machinery.

While this year’s cash incentive will go directly to the farmers, Singson said the farmers would have the latitude to  decide on which projects they intend to undertake.

Ilocos Sur received the award during the 4th National Quality Corn Achievers Awarding ceremony  held recently at The Farm in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

Aside from the provincial government of Ilocos Sur, the local government unit of Sta. Maria also won the grand slam award under the third to fifth class municipality category.

Constance Botacion was again honored as Outstanding Provincial Agriculturist of the Philippines while Oscar Tobia was adjudged as  Outstanding Provincial Corn Coordinator.

Also honored were Grace Cardona and Diosdado Mendoza from the town of Sta. Maria as Outstanding Municipal Agriculturist and Outstanding Municipal Corn Coordinator, respectively.

Ronan Tumbaga and Oliver Quidangen from Burgos town were likewise recognized as outstanding agricultural extension workers.

Aside from the plaque of recognition, the province received  P3 million as cash prize for winning the national award.
