Social media: Apple's free U2 album annoys, threatens privacy

Alixandra Caole Vila - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - To wrap up Apple's iPhone and iWatch launch event on Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook went up the stage with U2 lead singer Bono and the band as it played its new single, “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)” from their album "Songs of Innocence." To everyone's surprise, days later, their album was automatically downloaded to every phone, tablet and computer that opened up iTunes. While most of the gifts are welcome, some just are not.

Most people think that the ability of Apple to just hack someone else's privacy is pretty scary and out of control.

The fact that U2 can put there music on you phones without your consent is pretty scary ... - @Giavanni_Ruffin

If Apple can just drop a U2 album on my phone without my permission I know they helping the Feds - @operatable

i was naked and vulnerable in the shower listening to songs on shuffle and it started playing the new U2 album i feel so violated by apple. - @danisnotonfire

The whole thing w/ the U2 album...how scary is it that all of our phones can be accessed at the same time w/o giving notice or us approving - @AlecWali

If Apple can forcefully download a U2 album into everyone's iTunes library IMAGINE WHAT ELSE THEY CAN DO - @jennxpenn

Possibly too early to say if Apple sending a U2 album to everyone has played a part in the raising of the terror alert. - @GrogsGamut

So I can go to jail for illegally downloading music but Apple can put an entire U2 album on my phone. Makes sense - @Griffins_door12

Apple forcibly installs U2 malware on everybody's phones, two days later the terror threat level goes up. Join the dots. - @s_bridges

What made Apple users even more mad? Unfortunately, it is rather taxing to totally get rid of the album in your phone. You can only hide the songs from the local iTunes account, but they will still exist in your iCloud.

Apple logic: U want U2 new album?Great will put it on ur phone for free! U do not want U2 new album? Great will put it on ur phone for free! - @loudmoutholeary

And just in case Apple did not know, not every one is a fan of U2

I saw the U2 album on my iTunes yesterday and didn't even think twice about it. (I don't listen to U2) #idiot - @Princess_GF_

I don't even want the U2 album and it's free. Next time apple download free country music on my phone mkkaayy geniuses - @daniyelllle

Presumably, Apple did this so they could call it the “largest album release in history."
